The story begins with Mrs. Rabbit and her four bunnies living under a tree. He encounters various vegetables and eats his fill before being discovered by the farmer, leading to a thrilling chase. Peter, still stuck in the farmer's net, is discovered by some birds who encourage him not to give up. Following their advice, Peter removes his jacket and escapes from the net. However, the farmer continues to chase him. Peter hides in a shed filled with garden tools and then jumps into a watering can filled with icy water to evade the farmer. The farmer, unaware of Peter's hiding place, continues his search. Peter sneezes, alerting the farmer to his presence. Benjamin encourages Peter to retrieve his items, and they successfully do so. However, water pours out of Peter's shoes, indicating it rained the previous night. Benjamin tries on the farmer's hat that the scarecrow was wearing but finds it too big. Despite Peter's concerns about being in the garden, Benjamin insists on getting some onions. They use Peter's handkerchief to carry the onions. As they continue to explore the garden, they hear a noise and hide under a basket when they spot a cat. The cat sits on their hiding place, and they wait for hours until Benjamin's father arrives, kicks the cat into a greenhouse, and locks her in, rescuing the cousins.

Benjamin's father scolds him for the trouble he's caused. Meanwhile, the farmer returns from town to find the garden in disarray. The scarecrow is missing its clothes, and the cat is locked in the greenhouse. Peter's mother, despite being upset with him, is relieved that he is safe and has his clothes back. The story concludes with a sense of resolution and gratitude.
